New Initiatives in Place for Students Heading Back to School

Many students across the state will head back to school Tuesday, and children and parents might notice new changes this year.

Here are some new initiatives in place this year:

All-Day Kindergarten

$2.2M Wind Turbine at Veterans Affairs Site Idle

A $2.2 million wind turbine at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility in St. Cloud remains broken, and a series of repairs has been ineffective.
    
A St. Cloud Times report says there have been similar issues with wind turbines at VA facilities in two other states.

Authorities across Minnesota are stepping up enforcement of Minnesota's "move over" law this weekend.
    
Sunday marks the 14th anniversary of the death of Trooper Ted Foss of Winona. Foss was making a traffic stop on Interstate 90 when he was hit by a passing vehicle and killed on Aug. 31, 2000.
    

Twin Cities Schools Launch Minnesota Thursdays to Feature Foods from Local Farms

Students in Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools will eat lunch food that comes from Minnesota farmers on the first Thursday of every month.

Inmate Dies in Stearns County Jail

An inmate at the Stearns County Jail has died.

Twenty-two-year-old Jerod Jakel of Sauk Rapid is believed to have committed suicide Sunday by hanging himself in his cell, according to Sheriff John Sanner.

On Tuesday, the sheriff's office said correction staff responded to a medical situation at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday and found Jakel unresponsive.

Woman Airlifted with Severe Burns after Escaping House Fire in Sherburne Co.

A woman was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with severe burns after escaping a house fire in Sherburne County on Monday.

The fire was reported around 3:31 p.m. on the 16000 block of 57th Street Southeast in Santiago Township.
